Washington, D.C. – The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced a major new initiative in the nation’s fight against heart disease. The Million Hearts Initiative builds on findings that a concerted focus on four interventions called the ABCS – Aspirin Use, Blood Pressure Control, Cholesterol Control and Smoking Cessation - could save hundreds of thousands of lives per year.

"Health plans have been early innovators in fighting heart disease with programs built around the ABCs. Health plans have pioneered programs to identify individuals with risk factors and customize treatment plans. Our new publication ‘Health Insurance Plans Innovative Initiatives to Combat Cardiovascular Disease’ demonstrates the leadership that our community has taken.

“We strongly support this new initiative, are eager to collaborate with other stakeholders and are proud to share work we believe can contribute significantly to this important effort," said America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) President and CEO Karen Ignagni.
