AHIP Announces Commitment to NQF’s National Priorities Partnership

Partners Will Work Collaboratively to Achieve Consensus Goals on Better Quality

Washington, D.C. – Today, AHIP joined with 28 prominent organizations representing business, consumers, and professional societies in support of the National Quality Forum’s (NQF’s) National Priorities Partnership. Over the past year, Partnership members have worked to identify areas where stakeholders can collectively make an immediate difference and have identified six priority areas to improve the overall quality of health services across the nation.

AHIP is committed to the work of the Partnership and to its six goals:

  • Engaging Patients and Families in Managing Health and Making Decisions About Care;
  • Improving the Health of the Population;
  • Improving the Safety and Reliability of America’s Healthcare System;
  • Ensuring Patients Receive Well-Coordinated Care across all Providers, Settings, and Levels of Care;
  • Guaranteeing Appropriate and Compassionated Care for Patients with Life-Limiting Illnesses; and
  • Eliminating Waste While Ensuring the Delivery of Appropriate Care.

“Reform in health care requires leadership and is only possible through the engagement of all the stakeholders in achieving common goals,” said AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni. “Focusing on areas of clear consensus and critical need, the National Priorities Project is committed to making a difference in the health of the nation,” she said.

AHIP’s Quality Committee has endorsed this effort; its co-chair, Dr. George Isham, who has represented the industry on the project, participated in today’s events to publicly launch this major effort. AHIP’s Board of Directors urged AHIP’s strong support for the Partnership and its goals.

“America’s Health Insurance Plans is proud to be a member of the National Priorities Partnership,” said Dr. Isham, co-chair AHIP Quality Committee, and medical director and chief health officer for HealthPartners. “Representative of the full spectrum of our healthcare system, the National Priorities Partnership is poised to drive real healthcare change,” he said.

AHIP has provided NQF with information on programs, projects, and initiatives already underway to address the priorities, and has committed to continue with efforts to advance work in the six areas. The community of health insurance plans has a tradition of sharing information on best practices so that what is working can be replicated and have greater impact as a result.
