Wednesday Workshops
Starting Up and Advancing Your Company’s Health Literacy Program
(Attendance is strictly limited to AHIP Member health insurance plans only.)
Wednesday, June 18
8:00 am – 2:00 pm
In 2004, the Institute of Medicine issued a landmark report documenting the large gap between how health information is presented and the ability of a significant number of Americans to comprehend it, a problem often referred to as poor “health literacy.”
Recent studies have demonstrated the breadth of the problem, which dramatically affects quality of care and may account for up to $200 billion in unnecessary costs annually. Individuals who do not understand and cannot act on the medical information and instructions they are given are more likely to be hospitalized and less likely to properly manage their chronic conditions. One study reported increased mortality among elderly individuals with low health literacy.
With our nation’s epidemic of chronic care and an increasing reliance on consumers to play a role in managing and optimizing their own health and health care, it is imperative that health insurers understand the implications of poor health literacy, and the potential for clear health communication.
This is a problem that affects every area of your business operations and must be addressed by all of the disciplines whose work—directly or indirectly—involves communicating with your members.
This workshop will provide the tools you need to start up and advance their health literacy programs, including:
- Background on health literacy and the importance of clear health communication to health insurance plans’ operations.
- The basic elements of a health literacy program: what steps do insurers need to take to develop and advance a commitment to clear health communication? What are the internal and external roadblocks and how can they be overcome?
- Case studies from local, regional, and national companies whose programs are maturing. How are they achieving their goals? How are they measuring success? What lessons can we learn from their experiences? What tools can we borrow and share?
- Resources and tools available to companies as they develop their programs
Faculty will include a nationally renowned health literacy expert and professionals from a variety of disciplines in health insurance plans who have helped to build a capacity for clear health communication in their organizations.

Oral & Medical Health
Wednesday, June 18
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
A growing body of evidence connects oral health with overall systemic wellness. Research showing an association between treatment of periodontal disease and improved outcomes in conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, preterm births, and stroke has important implications for research, policy, and practice. Leading experts in the medical and dental communities will review the scientific evidence linking oral and medical health, comment on current practices and research in this area, and discuss future directions and policy implications. An audience response system will enable workshop participants to interact with expert faculty throughout this important discussion.
Workshop participants will have an opportunity to:
- explore the current scientific research and practices on the relationship between periodontal disease and chronic conditions.
- discuss current and future directions in research, policy and practice.
- identify strategies for improvement in care such as better care coordination, screening tests, and designing coverage and policies.

Value-based Designs for Improved Consumer Health and Reduced Cost Inflation
Sponsored by sanofi-aventis US LLC
Wednesday, June 18
1:00 pm – 5:30 pm
The growing body of case studies shows that value-based designs—encompassing benefits, purchasing, services and segment messaging—are delivering on the promise of improved health quality. Using data to drive the resource decisions is the foundation of the movement. Leading innovators will share the successes and challenges of removing access barriers, driving behavior change, and measuring outcomes that matter to both the consumer/patient and the payer/purchaser. Interactive discussions with feedback from experts from the Center for Health Value Innovation who will provide real-time dialogue on ideas, technology, and incentive-driven designs.
Workshop participants will have an opportunity to:
- Explore the experiences of employers and health service providers who are using data to create incentive-driven plans to change behavior.
- Identify menus of options to reduce waste from inappropriate health care use.
- Create the business case for change at the health insurance plan level—for both fully insured and self-insured companies, particularly in the mid-market segment.
- Consider how technology and aligned incentives can accelerate the behavior change in stakeholder segments.

| Emerging Opportunities in the Global Health Care Market |
Emerging Opportunities in the Global Health Care Market
Wednesday, June 18
2:00 pm – 5:30 pm
As governments and citizens around the world deal with escalating health care costs, aging populations, increasing consumer demands and expectations, and frequent funding challenges to government-run and other health care programs, more and more nations are turning to the private sector to look for ways to improve coverage, access, and quality of care. New opportunities are developing for health insurers, supporting organizations and providers—in emerging economies as well as others―to improve processes and care within government run programs as well as emerging opportunities for private health insurance options. In addition, some consumers are choosing to travel outside their own country in pursuit of quality, accessible, affordable care. Cutting-edge information systems, care and disease management techniques, and performance-based initiatives are becoming increasingly critical to improve health care quality and value.
Leading experts will:
- Explore current trends, and their drivers, in today's global health care market.
- Identify opportunities for growth in the private health care sector available to insurers, supporting organizations and providers.
- Discuss challenges and solutions in meeting demands of governments, purchasers, and consumers in a variety of geographical settings.
- Fit the role of technology, care management, and performance-based initiatives within the context of the global health care arena.
