About the presenters:
Philip Marshall, MD, MPH, Vice President Product Strategy, WebMD Health Services
Dr. Marshall is the Vice President of Product Strategy for WebMD Health Services. At WebMD since 1998, Dr. Marshall has focused his professional career on the effort to place consumers at the center of their healthcare. He has innovated in the areas of Personal Health Records, personalization, and solutions that help consumers make better healthcare decisions. Dr. Marshall currently oversees WebMD’s product strategy within the corporate and payer markets, helping more than 200 large employers and health plans deploy solutions that aid in their transition to consumer-centric healthcare. Dr. Marshall is also active in creating connectivity solutions that link consumers to the different providers and systems that are part of their continuum of care.
A recognized industry expert, Dr. Marshall has testified before the National Center for Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) and has presented alongside former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders on the subject of Personal Health Records. Dr. Marshall’s solutions have won industry awards, including the 2007 Market Leadership award from Frost and Sullivan, and have been utilized in Personal Health Record projects by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He is a participating member in Markle Foundation’s Connecting for Health Steering Group, the Commission for the Certification of Health Information Technology (CCHIT) Personal Health Record Workgroup, and the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) Consumer Perspective Workgroup.
Dr. Marshall earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and has residency training in both general surgery and public health and preventive medicine. He has a Masters in Public Health, and resides in Portland, Oregon.
David Kaelber, MD, PhD, MPH, Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Internist and Pediatrician, The MetroHealth System, Case Western Reserve University
Dr. Kaelber serves as the first Chief Medical Informatics Officer of the MetroHealth System, a large academic teaching hospital system affiliated with Case Western Reserve University. He is also a practicing internist and pediatrician. The MetroHealth System is in the top 5% of all hospital systems in terms of the completeness of their electronic medical record deployment. As CMIO, Dr. Kaelber assists in setting the agenda for, implementing, and supporting all clinical information systems within the healthcare system for a large range of clinical care, research, and teaching purposes.
Prior to becoming CMIO, Dr. Kaelber completed his National Library of Medicine medical informatics fellowship at the Center for Information Technology Leadership at Partners Healthcare under Dr. Blackford Middleton. During his fellowship, he led a CITL team to evaluate the value of personal health records. His informatics interests include personal health records, electronic medical records, clinical decision support, teaching medical informatics to other health professionals, and using electronic medical records for chronic disease detection and management.
