WASHINGTON, D.C. – Your oral health is a window into your body’s overall health, which is why it’s important to have high-quality dental care. The good news for today’s dental patients: Not only are patients overwhelmingly satisfied with their dental coverage, but the vast majority also report their benefits give them access to high-quality care. That’s according to a new study by Global Strategy Group on behalf of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

Around 170 million Americans rely on dental insurance to cover dental services like diagnostic, preventative, and restorative care. The study gathered feedback from patients who have visited their dentist, or other dental specialist in the past year. Participants reported on the value, benefits, customer service, and overall quality of care they get through their dental plans.

Additional key findings include:

  • Offers Broad Networks, High Quality, and Is User Friendly: More than 70 percent of patients stated that their dental plans made it easy for them to find an in-network dentist or specialist. Their plan also helped them get a dental appointment in a timely fashion, was easy to use, and let them choose a dentist that best fits their needs.
  • Protects Oral Health and Covers Unexpected Costs: About half of patients say their dental insurance preserves their health. They also believe their oral health would deteriorate without it. And they would be unable to pay for expensive, unexpected procedures like crowns, root canals or fillings.
  • Provides Financial Security for the Whole Family: Most parents who responded said their dental plan allows them to provide specialized care for their children. Their plan also eases concerns about paying for procedures like braces or wisdom teeth removal.

“Dental care plays an important role in all aspects of health, helping to prevent chronic disease and reduce medical costs,” said Tom Meyers, AHIP Vice President of Product Policy. “This study paints a clear picture of just how valuable this type of coverage is to millions of patients and their families.”
