Critical Health Industry Challenges

Washington, D.C. – Key health care stakeholders have taken a major step toward addressing some of the industry’s most complex challenges, according to America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), which today announced the AHIP Innovation Lab in the booming technology sector of Chicago’s West Loop.

The Innovation Lab uses peer groups of health care professionals, thought leaders, and subject matter experts to turn ideas into actionable, outcomes-driven solutions to a particular challenge. These “solutions working groups” will focus on important issues, such as chronic care management, population health, big data, fraud and abuse, and telemedicine through the lens of a rapidly evolving health care landscape.

“As technology continues to drive health care stakeholders to improve, the Innovation Lab is a terrific move forward in which the health plans can leverage best in class partnerships and resources to transform health care for consumers,” said AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni.

The Innovation Lab, a first-of-its-kind health care “action hub” where the best minds from multiple industry sectors can work together to deliver creative solutions to specific problems, is fully equipped with a state-of-the-art digital media studio, secure servers, fiber connectivity, satellite capabilities, and 26,000 square feet of collaborative work space.

Health Care Stakeholders Step Up to Solve Challenges

Accenture, Amgen, and GE Healthcare will contribute guidance and thought leadership centered around the shared goal of solving critical health care challenges. Their support will enable the innovation lab to serve as a space where health plans and stakeholders can collaborate, create, and implement breakthrough concepts with technology resources in a team-based environment.

“In a time of fundamental change across our industry, patients, providers and health plans today need new solutions to address the challenges of cost, quality and access,” said Jon Zimmerman, vice president and general manager, Clinical Business Solutions at GE Healthcare. “By working with AHIP and other thought leaders on this pioneering effort, we’ll be creating demonstrable and lasting impact to health care.”

“Biotechnology innovation is critical to addressing some of society’s most serious illnesses”, said Dr. Joshua Ofman, senior vice president at Amgen. “AHIP’s new Innovation Lab provides the opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and appreciate complex challenges associated with our evolving health care landscape, including ways to provide high quality, affordable health care, to ensure we can all deliver on our promise to patients.”

“This program will provide a place for health plans to focus on executing their innovation agenda,” said Kaveh Safavi M.D., J.D., global managing director for Accenture’s health business. “We are pleased to be part of shaping the AHIP Innovation Lab and helping our health stakeholders as they tackle the industry’s most pressing challenges.”
