WASHINGTON, D.C. – America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) announced that Richard A. Bankowitz, MD, MBA, FACP is joining the organization as Executive Vice President for Clinical Affairs. In this role, he will lead Clinical Affairs and the Center for Policy and Research, and he will work closely with the clinical leaders of AHIP’s member plans to promote high-value health care for consumers.
A board-certified internist and medical informaticist, Dr. Bankowitz has more than 30 years of experience in the health care industry. He joins AHIP from Premier Inc., where he served as chief medical officer, providing clinical input to Premier’s research, performance improvement, and policy efforts. Dr. Bankowitz has also served as the medical director of CareScience, a health care improvement company, and as corporate information architect of the University HealthSystem Consortium (now Vizient).
“Richard brings a unique combination of clinical and business acumen, as well as a wealth of experience in measuring and improving health care quality and value,” said Marilyn Tavenner, President and CEO of AHIP. “We are excited to have him join us as we continue to work with our members to make health care more affordable and higher quality for every American.”
From 2010 to 2012, Dr. Bankowitz was named among the Top 25 Clinical Informaticists in the United States by Modern Healthcare. Modern Healthcare also named him one of the Top 50 Physician Executives in the United States for 2013 and 2014. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and has been a National Library of Medicine clinical trainee in medical informatics. He holds an MD and an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BS in chemistry/biology from Union College in Schenectady, NY.
