AHIP Statement For House Hearing On Preventing And Treating Opioid Abuse In Medicare Program
AHIP submitted a statement to the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health for a hearing held on February 6, 2018 that focused on preventing and treating opioid abuse in the Medicare program. Our statement emphasizes that health insurance providers are addressing the opioid crisis through a comprehensive approach encompassing prevention, early intervention, and treatment and recovery.
Our statement focuses on the following:
- A broad overview of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program and the role insurance providers are playing in tackling the opioid crisis;
- Steps currently underway to stem the overutilization of opioids among Medicare beneficiaries, including implementation of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA);
- AHIP’s recommendations on the proposed CARA implementation plan and additional opportunities for improving upon and advancing ongoing efforts by CMS and plan sponsors; and
- Examples of how insurance providers are combatting the opioid crisis, including AHIP’s Safe, Transparent Opioid Prescribing (STOP) Initiative.
