WASHINGTON, D.C. –  America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) issued the following statement following the introduction of the Jobs and Premium Protection Act (H.R. 2447)a bipartisan bill that would eliminate the Health Insurance Tax (HIT), and companion legislation to S. 80. The bill was introduced by Congressman Anthony Brindisi (D-NY) and Congressman Kenny Marchant (R-Texas).

“Americans deserve access to high quality care and coverage at a cost they can afford – this bill delivers for them. Permanently repealing the Health Insurance Tax is a commonsense solution that would save billions of dollars by lowering premiums for millions of families, seniors, and small business owners.

“Nearly 150 million Americans will pay more for their coverage because of this tax. Health insurance providers are already developing coverage options for 2020 and deadlines are rapidly approaching. The submission deadline for 2020 Medicare Advantage plans is just a few weeks away (June 3) – and the HIT is projected to increase premiums for seniors by $241.

“We thank Representatives Brindisi and Marchant for their continued leadership in promoting health care affordability and accessibility for every American. This looming uncertainty of the HIT poses a significant challenge to affordable, quality coverage for every American. The time to act is now and we strongly encourage our leaders in Congress to pass this bill and fully repeal this tax.”
