STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act of 2019 an important step in protecting Americans health and financial security

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Matt Eyles, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), issued the following statement following the introduction of the STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act by a bipartisan group of Senators, led by Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Todd Young (R-IN), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Tom Carper (D-DE), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Sherrod Brown (D-OH):

“Every American deserves affordable, high-quality coverage and care, as well as control over their own health care choices. Patients should not receive a surprise bill for care they did not choose – or didn’t even know they received in the first place. And Americans shouldn’t see their premiums go up because of the actions of a few specialty doctors.

“We commend this bipartisan group of Senators for coming together to protect American patients and consumers. We support solutions found in the STOP Surprise Medical Bills Act that protect patients, rely on the reasonable rates negotiated by the free market, and ensure networks can continue to play an important role in delivering high quality and lower costs. These are the kinds of solutions that will improve health and reduce health care costs for everyone.

“We look forward to continuing to work with Congress and the Administration on real solutions to the surprise medical bills that impact too many American families.”

AHIP is part of  a coalition that has agreed to guiding principles that state patients should be protected and informed, while policies should work to restrain costs and ensure quality. AHIP also signed on to a letter that recommended legislative solutions to our Congressional leaders.
