Wasteful health care services that have no clinical benefit, are potentially harmful, or are delivered in an unnecessarily high-cost setting have the potential to harm patients and squander millions of precious healthcare dollars.

Blue Health Intelligence (BHI) analyzed claims data from 20.5 million commercial health plan members to understand the impact of low-value care (LVC) in today’s commercially insured populations. Using only 16 LVC measures based on recommendations from Choosing Wisely®, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation, BHI discovered:

  • The total cost of these 16 measures of LVC equaled more than $1 billion;
  • Nearly 10% of members received LVC over the course of a year;
  • Relative to other regions, LVC occurred more frequently in the Southern United States; and
  • Transferring certain procedures to less-intensive sites can save health insurance providers millions of dollars.
