Coalition Members Share Medicare Advantage Success Stories, Hopes for the Program’s Future

Washington, D.C. As the Medicare program approaches its 50th Anniversary this week, seniors in AHIP’s Coalition for Medicare Choices (CMC) are hosting birthday parties across the country to celebrate the difference Medicare Advantage has made in their lives. This weekend, Coalition seniors in McDonough, Georgia, kicked off the festivities with a party to share their personal Medicare Advantage stories and to connect with CMC members who are working to protect the program for future generations. Check out a video of the party-goers wishing Medicare a ‘happy birthday’ here.

More than 16 million Americans — roughly 30 percent of all Medicare beneficiaries — have chosen to enroll in Medicare Advantage for the high-quality care and services these plans provide. The Coalition is a national grassroots organization of nearly two million current Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. Since 1999, the Coalition and its members have worked to strengthen Medicare Advantage for the millions of seniors and individuals with disabilities who depend on this vital coverage option.

Recently, CMC seniors traveled to Capitol Hill to connect with policymakers on the value of Medicare Advantage’s care coordination and disease management programs. Two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries have two or more chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, and these seniors depend on the integrated approach to care delivery that is signature to the Medicare Advantage program. As a result, studies have found Medicare Advantage enrollees consistently have lower hospital readmission rates and receive more appropriate care than beneficiaries in traditional Medicare.

These are among the many Medicare Advantage success stories that will be celebrated over the next week during parties in Tallahassee, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Portland, Oregon; Silver Spring, Maryland; Helena, Montana; Raleigh, North Carolina; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Knoxville, Tennessee; Vancouver, Washington; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
