It’s an interesting time to be in the health industry, which is in the midst of shifting toward providing consumer-centric care that is highly personal.
The common definition of health care has expanded far beyond clinical care to include all aspects of health, including financial health, emotional health and community connections. At the same time, health care leaders are acknowledging the large role that social determinants of health (where a person lives, what level of employment they have) play in a person’s individual health status.
Along with this consumer view, the U.S. health care system is so complex that more than half of consumers do not understand how to navigate it appropriately, reveals Accenture research. This low health care system literacy is creating an estimated $4.8 billion annual administrative cost burden for health organizations (source: “The Hidden Cost of Healthcare System Complexity”, Accenture, 2018).
Health insurance providers and employers alike are bombarded by what seems like an endless supply of point solutions, creating chaos for both the organization in choosing what to offer to whom, as well as to members who must figure out how to navigate to the unique programs they need.
