How NYC’s MetroPlus Health Plan Engaged Members in Telehealth During the COVID-19 Pandemic

MetroPlus Health Plan, a wholly owned subsidiary of NYC Health + Hospitals, currently serves more than 550,000 members in New York City, 72% of whom are covered through its Medicaid line of business. When COVID-19 hit the city in March 2020, MetroPlusHealth activated quickly to offer its entire member base access to virtual visits.

During this webinar, the health insurance provider will discuss how it engaged its members in virtual care during the pandemic and will share firsthand accounts of member experiences with telehealth. Marie Renzi from Amwell will also join the webinar to discuss telehealth engagement best practices for health plans.

Attendees will learn how MetroPlus Health:

  • Successfully engaged a largely Medicaid population in a telehealth benefit
  • Leveraged multiple marketing channels to inform and educate members about telehealth
  • Used interactive voice response (IVR) calls and SMS texts to drive telehealth registration
  • Engaged nearly 7,000 members in less than three months
  • Is preparing for a potential second wave of the pandemic


Kathryn Soman

Ms. Soman is responsible for strategic planning, direction, & operation of the Corporate Communications Department for one of the New York area’s largest HMOs, with annual revenues of over $2.5 billion.  MetroPlusHealth’s mission is to provide access to free or low-cost healthcare across New York City to all children & adults who qualify for State-and Federally-sponsored insurance plans (Child Health Plus, Medicaid, Medicare, MLTC, FIDA and NY State of Health Marketplace plans). Currently, MetroPlusHealth is the plan of choice for over half a million New Yorkers.

Ms. Soman received her Master’s degree in Publishing Studies, Marketing, and Communications from the Gallatin School of Individualized Studies at New York University.

Marie Renzi
Director of Marketing, Health Plan and Employer Engagement

Marie Renzi is the Director of Health Plan and Employer Engagement at Amwell. She is passionate about bringing quality care into the home of every American through virtual care delivery, allowing consumers to get quick, easy and affordable access to the care they need when they need it most.

In her current role, she works to develop innovative engagement strategies and programs that reach consumers when they are looking to find or get care. Educating them around the value telehealth provides, common use cases and addressing frequent barriers to use.  From her time working at a large national health plan to her work at Amwell today, the programs and campaigns she’s launched have contributed to over $800 million in cost of care savings to both consumers, employers and their health plan providers.

Marie graduated with a bachelor’s of arts in biology with a concentration in pre-medical science from McDaniel College and lives in Maryland with her husband and three children.
