HSAs/FSAs: Consumer Attitudes Impacting Health and Wealth

Over the past 10 years, consumers have started to shift from traditional health insurance plans to high-deductible health plans (HDHPs). Nearly half the Americans with access to employer-sponsored health plans go the HDHP route. However, less than half of those HDHP enrollees are also enrolled in a Health Savings Account (HSA). Our research has revealed that this discrepancy can be attributed to consumers’ poor financial literacy.

Our job is to help people make the best decisions for their overall well-being, including health and wealth. In an industry made unnecessarily complex by jargon and dogged by consumers’ attitudes and long-held misconceptions, we need to be more attuned than ever to this guiding principle: We must keep it simple.

During this webinar, we will dive into the insights we gleaned from a multi-phased research study involving several focus groups comprised of people who use HSAs and FSAs and those who do not. Participants will understand how people feel about these accounts and about healthcare benefits in general, and the ways we in the benefits industry can simplify the way we talk about plans, accounts, and regulations.

Chris Byrd

He also is active in industry and government relations, and serves on the boards of the HSA Council, Employers Council on Flexible Compensation (ECFC), the Special Interest Group for IIAS Standards (SIGIS) Corporation and Coalition for Affordable Health Coverage. In 2000, Chris founded Evolution Benefits, an early iteration of WEX Health. Chris oversees WEX Health’s operations and service delivery, corporate development, M&A, legal, and industry and government relations efforts.

Jim Meduna, Senior Account Executive, for Healthcare and Insurance products within Visa’s Emerging Payment Solutions team, joined Visa in March 2008, bringing with him over 29 years of experience in the financial services industry.  Since joining the Visa Emerging Payment Solutions team, Jim has focused on maintaining and creating strong partnerships with Visa’s current partners and prospective partners such as financial institutions, TPA’s, payers, and payments companies.  Jim serves as a board member on the ECFC, HSA Council, and SIGIS organizations.  His previous work includes regional management at a Midwestern financial institution and various relationship management roles at a major payments processor.  Jim received his bachelors of business administration with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and resides in Omaha, Nebraska.
