about

According to the World Health Organization, the biggest issue globally in health care is non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma), and diabetes. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), these diseases cause 70% of deaths worldwide and the cost to fight these diseases will surge to $47 trillion by 2030.

Studies show factors such as lifestyle, genetics, social circumstances, medical care, and environmental exposure can directly impact the prevention of NCDs. Lifestyle changes have the largest impact of all these factors, representing 40% of the impact (Source: Mcinnis, et al (2002). The Case for More Active Policy Attention to Health Promotion. Health Affairs, 21 (2): 78-93).

Ultimately, citizens’ health is at stake. But the impact of NCDs is not one dimensional. NCDs affect the cost of health care. And, the medical claims’ burden associated to NCDs is an astronomical number that has a large impact on financial reserves. These reserves could be used for further research and/or to help fight these diseases vs. being used to pay to treat them.
