Using Nutrition to Enhance Medicare
Advantage Star Ratings

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people completely revaluated their relationship with the health care system. As in-person visits declined and telehealth appointments increased, people became much more interested in services in the home, including nutrition benefits. The number of Medicare Advantage plans offering supplemental nutrition benefits have increased rapidly over the past few years, due in large part to recent policy flexibilities introduced before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. After all, 85% of older adults have at least one chronic condition, while at least 60% have two or more.

Nutrition is clinically proven to effectively treat and slow the progression of several of the leading chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, renal disease and obesity. This may lead to substantial savings for health plans and ultimately help boost a plan’s Star ratings, a quality rating system used to measure how well providers and Medicare Advantage (MA) plans provide service to members. In this session, we’ll build the case for including nutrition benefits as an integral part of any strategy to enhance Star ratings.

Catherine Macpherson, MS, RDN

Catherine joined Mom’s Meals in 2017 as Vice President, Product Strategy and Development and Chief Nutrition Officer. She is responsible for ensuring the company’s nutrition solutions meet the needs of its partners by designing clinical programs that meet their strategic objectives.

Previously, Ms. Macpherson served as Vice President of Medication Adherence and Immunizations at Walgreens, led Healthcare Product Strategy at WebMD, and managed health and wellness programs for Ceridian, the National Institutes of Health and the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Catherine is a Registered Dietitian, a healthcare innovator, and a frequent speaker on the importance of nutrition to the aging population, care transitions and those managing chronic conditions.


Michael Gonzales
VP Medicare Sales and Account Management

Michael joined Mom’s Meals in 2021 as Vice President of Medicare Sales and Account Management. He is responsible for building and executing the sales strategy of our post-discharge and chronic condition management nutrition products into the Medicare Advantage and DSNP markets.

Previously, Michael served as Sales Director for Medicare and DSNP plans in North Carolina at UnitedHealthcare. In this role Michael was directly responsible for health plan growth, community engagement and agent training.  Prior to this role, Michael developed dental networks to support UnitedHealthcare Dental plan members and previous to that, spent 8 years on active duty in the United States Navy as a Navy Corpsman.

Michael is an experienced healthcare executive who has worked in various sales, contracting and leadership roles spanning 3 Fortune 20 organizations. In his spare time, Michael is currently pursuing his Masters in Management and Leadership through Western Governors University.
