Healthcare costs have shown continued inflation over the past 10 years. At the same time, the average income in Illinois has remained reasonably stable and the percentage of the uninsured population in rural Illinois has increased.(2, 3) This has resulted in more persons seeking financial aid within not-for-profit hospitals and healthcare systems. Illinois hospitals alone contribute $805 million in charity care annually, and since 2004 have reported an 88% increase in charity care.
