What is delivery system and payment reform and why does it matter?
Delivery and payment system reform is how we ensure that the right medical care gets to the right person at the right time and at the right price. That simple mission is a complex task.
Delivery system and payment reform encompasses many ideas, from how the health system can better use data and technology to inform care, to how medical practices are organized, to how doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers are paid for caring for patients.
The health system is shifting away from fee-for-service medical care in which health care providers are paid based on the number of tasks performed. Instead, we are moving toward a system in which each part of the health care system is incentivized to deliver the care most likely to keep a patient healthy.
Because there is no one-size-fits-all solution, health plans are working in partnership with physician organizations, hospitals, and other important stakeholders to move us toward a health care system that puts patients at the center.
