Majority Of Americans Satisfied With Their Vision Coverage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Eyes are not just a window to the soul—they are a key indicator of overall good health. To that end, vision coverage plans are delivering for families across the U.S. In a survey released today, an overwhelming majority—9 out of 10 respondents—reported they are satisfied with their vision coverage. This satisfaction is largely because many patients find their plans straightforward and accessible, according to a new study by Global Strategy Group on behalf of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

Millions of Americans rely on vision insurance to supplement major medical coverage. It covers services such as preventive screenings and eye exams, which are necessary to maintain good eyesight and identify early signs of eye disease and other health issues. The study gathered feedback from patients who have visited their optometrist, ophthalmologist, or optician within the past year. Participants reported on the value, benefits, affordability, customer service, and overall quality of care they get through their vision coverage.

“Protecting the health of your eyes is an important part of overall wellness,” said Tom Meyers, AHIP Vice President of Product Policy. “According to this survey, patients are clearly seeing the value in this type of coverage.”

The survey also found that vision coverage:

  • Allows for Easy, Convenient Appointments With High-Quality Providers: Almost 90 percent of respondents said they were able to quickly get a vision appointment with an in-network doctor. And 75 percent reported they were easily able to contact their provider if they had questions or feedback.
  • Covers Holistic Eye Care Services from Prevention to Specialized Care: The vast majority of patients responded that their vision plan allowed them to get regular preventive check-ups, and 66 percent stated they can get specialized care needed to treat a vision condition.
  • Offers Affordable Coverage and Financial Security for the Whole Family: Around 85 percent of patients indicated that their vision plan was affordable, and 77 percent found their plan made it easier to pay for eyeglasses or contacts. About 75 percent of parents who responded said that their vision plan eases concerns about paying for their children’s vision care.
