WASHINGTON, D.C. – Health plans across the nation are strongly committed to their communities and their members. Every day they work to provide access to health coverage for millions, bolster the job market, and support local economies. These essential contributions are brought to life through a new resource from America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP): Health Coverage: State-to-State.

“More people than ever have health care coverage today. But, for plans, their commitments are about so much more.” says Dr. Richard Bankowitz, Chief Medical Officer for AHIP. “They’re deeply dedicated to improving people’s health and wellness, protecting the financial security of their community, and investing in their employees.”

Together, the health plans surveyed for the new Health Coverage: State-to-State guide:

  • Cover approximately 170 million Americans.
  • Directly or indirectly employ more than 1.4 million people.
  • Contribute nearly $20.5 billion in state premium taxes.

Each state’s report includes additional details on how many lives are covered by the type of plan (e.g., Medicaid, Employer Group, Individual, Medicare Advantage), number of employees and average wage, and state tax contributed.

AHIP’s Health Coverage: State-to-State is available for free at www.ahip.org/2017-state-data/ including a simple, streamlined two-page PDF of each individual state. The report in its entirety may be found here.
