WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 20, 2019 – Matt Eyles, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), issued this statement following repeal of the Health Insurance Tax (HIT) in the final Congressional year-end spending package:

“Americans deserve access to high quality care and affordable coverage. Permanently repealing the Health Insurance Tax delivers on that promise, significantly lowering insurance premiums for millions of families, seniors, and small business owners.

“CMS recently issued an analysis identifying the HIT as a major driver of health care cost growth when it was in effect in 2018. And nearly 150 million Americans would pay more for their coverage if this tax was implemented in the future.

“We thank Congress and the Administration for its strong leadership and decisive action to repeal not just the Health Insurance Tax but the Cadillac Tax as well. Because of these bold steps, millions of Americans will pay less. These actions show a real commitment to preserving health care affordability and accessibility for every American. We look forward to continuing our work together on solutions to reduce high drug prices and costs, protect patients from surprise medical bills while improving affordability, and address additional drivers of high health care costs.”
