Amy Helwig, MD, MS

Amy Helwig leads RTI’s practice in commercial health, including RTI Health Advance. A family physician with expertise in health information technology, Dr. Helwig has extensive experience leading large health-care organizations and developing strategies to explore new payment models and improve clinical quality performance. She came to RTI in 2020 from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Plan, serving as Chief Quality Officer and vice president of quality improvement.


Amy Helwig leads RTI’s practice in commercial health, including RTI Health Advance. This unique practice combines scientific expertise with a strong technology platform, providing services that help improve quality and value throughout the commercial health marketplace.

A family physician with expertise in health information technology, Dr. Helwig has extensive experience leading large health-care organizations and developing strategies to explore new payment models and improve clinical quality performance. She came to RTI in 2020 from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Plan, where she served as chief quality officer and vice president of quality improvement for a plan that grew to cover 3.4 million people. Her background also includes 10 years at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, holding leadership positions at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).

Dr. Helwig is board certified with the American Board of Family Medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and a licensed physician in Virginia and Pennsylvania. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Clinical Informatics and a board-certified physician executive. She is active in her professional community, serving as a technical expert in patient safety, health care quality, pediatrics and informatics for multiple advisory boards and committees. She is also a frequently published author and reviewer for scientific journals and a sought-after invited speaker.
