Karen spent the first half of her career as a hands-on registered nurse in various settings. Transitioning to the health plan side in 2008, she became interested in the complex relationship between medical care, medical benefits, and health plan administration.
Since then, she has worked on the health plan side and payer/purchaser side implementing clinical programs, developing innovative benefits, and enhancing health plan offerings.
Having previously worked in Population Health at the UAW Medical Benefits Trust, she joined the University of Michigan Benefits Administration Office in December of 2021. The Benefit Administration Office manages medical benefits for about 115,000 employees and dependents of the University of Michigan campus and Michigan Medicine.
