WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Matt Eyles, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), issued this statement on today’s expected House floor vote on passage of the Middle Class Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2019 (H.R. 748)– a bipartisan bill that will permanently repeal a 40% excise tax on employer-provided coverage. In just a few short years, this tax – also known as the “Cadillac tax” – will increase costs for most of the 180 million Americans who get their coverage through a job:

“Americans deserve access to high-quality, comprehensive coverage they can afford. Permanently repealing this 40% excise tax would help reduce consumer costs through lower deductibles, improve health care access and make health care coverage more affordable for hundreds of millions of hardworking Americans.

“We thank the House of Representatives for its leadership on this bipartisan solution to bring down health care premiums and costs. Congress can further build on this progress by repealing the health insurance tax (HIT) – through H.R. 1398, The Health Insurance Tax Relief Act  – which increases premiums by tens of billions of dollars for employer-provided and individual market coverage, and increases costs for seniors with Medicare Advantage as well as state Medicaid programs. Taking action now on both these taxes will significantly improve health care affordability for American workers, businesses, and taxpayers.

“We look forward to working with the Senate to repeal both of these taxes and we urge Congress to pass this bill to improve affordability and access for every American.”
