Physician, Advocate, Advisor, Author

Dr. Archelle Georgiou is a physician, “recovering” healthcare industry executive, professor, health reporter, and author. But colleagues think of her as a lightning rod for change. Between 1995 and 2007, she was a senior executive and Chief Medical Officer of UnitedHealthcare where she dismantled many of the company’s bureaucratic policies that hassled patients and physicians. Since 2008, Archelle has served as a senior advisor to untraditional healthcare companies that range from education and analytics to financial services, real estate and mining – because she believes that healthcare innovation will come from cross-industry collaboration.

Archelle is adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota’s School of Management and also serves as Chair of the Medical Industry Leadership Institute Executives in Residence. She has covered over 1000 medical topics as the the on-air health expert for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul with a weekly segment and regular health specials that encourage viewers to overcome the power imbalance with their doctors and advocate for themselves. In February 2017, she published her first book, “Health Care Choices: 5 Steps to Getting the Medical Care You Want and Need” (Rowman & Littlefield). Dr. Georgiou earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was board-certified in Internal Medicine before pivoting her career to managed care in order to have a broader impact on the healthcare system. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota
