Darin Gordon is the former Director and CEO of Tennessee’s Medicaid program – TennCare, a $12+ billion health care enterprise that at its peak provided services to over 1.5 million Tennesseans. Gordon is a seasoned executive with over 23 years of experience in state health insurance programs and is a nationally recognized thought leader on Medicaid and health care policy, known for his expertise in serving complex populations, delivery system transformation, value-based purchasing, managed care and cost containment.
Under Gordon’s leadership, Tennessee became an innovator in leveraging competitive managed care contracting strategies to more effectively manage costs, improve quality and transform health care delivery. While he was at TennCare, the program consistently achieved record low cost trends while patient satisfaction scores reached record highs of 95%. During that time, the program was also nationally recognized for a variety of innovations in value-based purchasing; behavioral health integration; managed long-term services and supports; managed care contracting strategies, and payment and delivery system reform.
As the longest-serving Director and CEO of TennCare, Gordon has served with both Democrat and Republican Governors.
Gordon has provided executive leadership at the national level and made extensive contributions across the health care industry. He has served as a critical Medicaid and health policy resource for policy makers throughout the country through his direct support of individual states; in his leadership role as President of the National Association of Medicaid Directors; and his involvement in a variety of health care related initiatives and task forces for the National Governors’ Association.
Gordon is a Fellow of the Medicaid Leadership Institute, a Fellow of the Nashville Health Care Council Fellows program and served as a Board member of Leadership Health Care. He is also a founding member of United States of Care.
Gordon is a member of the Cressey & Company Distinguished Executives Council and is a Director of Addus Homecare, Upperline Health, Advanced Care Partners, HHA Exchange and Siloam Health. He also serves as Chairman of 180 Health Partners, a member of the Duke-Margolis/West Health State Payment Reform Advisory Board, and as a member of the MITRE Health Advisory Committee. Gordon is also a Commissioner of the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) which is charged with advising Congress, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and States on Medicaid and CHIP policy.
Following public service, Gordon founded Gordon & Associates, LLC based in Nashville, Tennessee. His firm served as a cornerstone for the creation of Speire Healthcare Strategies, LLC where he currently serves as a Founding Partner.
