Dr. Heatherington is the founder and President of Oregon’s oldest Medicaid managed care organization. FamilyCare has led the way as the first health insurance company to capitate primary care physicians, specialists and hospitals and to fully integrate physical and mental health care. FamilyCare currently serves 130,000 people in the tri-county area with an annual budget of over $600 million.
Dr. Heatherington is a recognized leader in innovative health care strategies and has developed a new model of insurance services featuring integrated administrative service teams that provides streamlined services to both patients and physicians. FamilyCare’s enhanced payments to primary care physicians are the highest in the nation and has the reduced the company’s overall health care costs over 5% proving that a robust primary care system in the best way to lower the cost of health care.
As a civic leader, Dr. Heatherington has served on many boards including the Oregon Health Council, the Oregon State Bar Disciplinary Board, the Oregon Symphony and the American Osteopathic Foundation. In 2008, he and Dr. Larry Mullins CEO of Samaritan Health Systems founded Western University of Health Sciences Northwest College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lebanon, Oregon.
Dr. Heatherington earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science at Willamette University. Honors and awards include a Doctor of Humane Letters from Western University and the Distinguished Service Certificate from the American Osteopathic Association. To recognize his 30 years as President, FamilyCare created the Heatherington Foundation for Innovation and Education in Health Care in 2014.
