Divisional Vice President of External Affairs and Chief of Staff at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana

John Doran is the Divisional Vice President of External Affairs at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana. John joined BCBSMT in July 2012 after more than 12 years in journalism and communications. As part of the executive leadership team at BCBSMT, John oversees all government, public and media relations, including BCBSMT’s strategies for legislative policy, internal and external communications, advertising and branding, community outreach and volunteerism, and internal employee engagement.

Prior to joining BCBSMT, John was a leading journalist in Oregon and Montana. From 1999 to 2006, he worked on the metro desk of the Statesman Journal, a 65,000-circulation daily newspaper in Salem, Ore., and then as city editor of the Missoulian in Missoula, Mont., from 2006-07. John served nearly five years (2007-11) as the executive editor at the Independent Record newspaper in Helena. He also worked from 2011-12 as communications officer for then-Attorney General Steve Bullock, who is now the governor of Montana. In addition, John was the head baseball coach at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore., from 2000-05.

John earned his bachelor’s degree in 1999 in political science, with a minor in photography, from the University of Portland, where he also captained the Pilots Division I baseball team for two years. In 2003, John earned his master’s degree in education from American Intercontinental University.

John is an avid mountain biker and trail runner, and is active with the Prickly Pear Land Trust in Helena. He is the immediate past chairman of the board of directors for ExplorationWorks! science museum in Helena and coaches Little League baseball. He and his wife, Anna, have two children: Ellie and Finn.
