Lisa Suennen has spent more than 30 years in healthcare as entrepreneur, advisor and venture capitalist. Today she is Leader of Manatt Phelps & Phillips Digital and Technology Practice, as well as Managing Partner of the Manatt Venture Fund. Her role spans technology across all sectors, although she primarily focuses on the intersection of innovation, healthcare and technology. Her clients include payers, health systems, and life sciences and medical technology manufacturers and emerging companies.
Lisa spent the last 23 years as a venture investor, most recently leading the GE Ventures healthcare fund; previously she founded the American Heart Association Cardeation Venture Fund and, before that, spent 15 years as a partner with healthcare fund Psilos Group. She was previously part of the leadership team that built Merit Behavioral Care from startup to $800mm in revenue, serving in executive roles through Merit’s successful IPO and exit. Earlier she worked in technology product management and marketing.
Lisa serves on the Boards of digital health companies Health Reveal, Inc. and HealthXL and as an advisor to several venture funds and emerging companies. She is on faculty at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business where she teaches healthcare venture capital and innovation. Lisa chairs the advisory board of the NASA -funded Translational Research Institute for Space Health that is responsible for identifying innovative approaches to reduce human health risks on long-duration exploration missions, including NASA’s Journey to Mars. She also co-founded CSweetener, which matches women in and nearing the healthcare C-suite with mentors.
Lisa holds an B.A. in Political Science and Communications from the University of California at Berkeley and was selected for the inaugural class of the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovators Fellowship. Lisa is also the author of the widely-read Venture Valkyrie blog and co-hosted the Tech Tonics podcast.
