Mark Mugiishi, MD, FACS, champions good health and well-being for everyone in Hawaii. As executive vice president, chief health officer, and chief medical officer at the Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA), he leads innovative programs that improve the health of HMSA members and support thousands of Hawaii doctors in delivering the best care to patients.  During his tenure and under his leadership, HMSA has launched precedent setting alternative payment models (including global payment for primary care for 90% of the network), integrated health and case management, and best in class health IT.

In addition to his leadership at HMSA, Dr. Mugiishi co-founded two free-standing ambulatory surgery centers in Hawaii: the Endoscopy Institute of Hawaii and the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii. He was also medical director and part of the startup team at two Hawaii technology accelerators, Cellular Bioengineering, Inc. and Skai Technologies, LLC.  He’s been a general surgeon in the state for nearly 30 years where he has consistently been on Hawaii’s “Best Doctors of Hawaii” list and is Associate Chair of the Department of Surgery and former Director of Surgical Education at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Dr. Mugiishi produced the Broadway musical “Allegiance” starring George Takei and Lea Salonga that ran at the Shubert’s Longacre Theater in New York City in 2015-16. It begins regional tours in 2018-19 in Los Angeles, Boston, and Hawaii.  The motion picture version has shown across the country and internationally in Canada and Japan.

He is also the winningest high school basketball coach in Hawaii history, coaching ‘Iolani School to 11 league championships and seven state championships. In 2010, he was a coach for the All-American Nike Jordan Brand Classic game in Madison Square Garden.

Dr. Mugiishi received his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
