Dr. Melissa Berdell is the Director of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse in the Compliance Department at Gateway Health in Pittsburgh, PA. Additionally, Dr. Berdell is an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Medical Ethics at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, PA and an Adjunct Professor of Homeland/Corporate Securities at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA. Dr. Berdell received her Doctorate of Healthcare Ethics from Duquesne University in 2016. While at Duquesne University, she completed a clinical ethics residency program at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and completed a clinical internship at Value Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania. Dr. Berdell has a MS in the Administration of Criminal Justice from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA and a BA in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to her education, Dr. Berdell is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), an Accredited Healthcare Fraud Investigator (AHFI), and Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC). Dr. Berdell is a healthcare professional and professor with more than 20 years of experience including operational excellence, strategic development, compliance, finance, vendor management, claims payment, and fraud, waste, and abuse and has held previous positions at other managed care organizations and health plans including AVP of Payment Integrity, National Director of Program Integrity, Director of Compliance, and Internal Auditor.
