Senior Vice President and Chief Analytics and Data Officer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana
With more than 25 years of experience at major technology, pharmaceutical, medical device and health insurance companies, Somesh Nigam oversees all analytics and data functions at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. He is transforming how the organization gets, stores, analyzes and uses data to improve the health and lives of Louisianans. Nigam is senior vice president and chief analytics & data officer at Blue Cross, a nonprofit health insurer and the oldest and largest in the state. Nigam has demonstrated how big data in conjunction with artificial intelligence can enhance collaboration between insurers and doctors/hospitals, advance a value-based payment system with more accountability, increase transparency and improve patient engagement. Data scientists and analysts on Nigam’s team presented their health and wellness research at the 2018 International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.
Before moving to Louisiana in 2017, Nigam was vice president of Information and Data Governance and Health Informatics with IBM’s Global Chief Data Office. There, he played a key role in establishing data as the foundation of IBM’s cognitive business transformation and was part of the Watson Health team. Before joining IBM, Nigam was senior vice president and chief informatics officer at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia. He championed cutting-edge data initiatives, working with other business areas to use reporting and analytics to cut waste and fraud, reduce costs and manage quality. Nigam is a sought-after speaker at national healthcare analytics conferences and forums. He has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. He earned his Master of Science and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor.
