The Value Of Engaging Consumers In Health Care

Consumers actively engaged in their health care live generally healthier lives and experience lower health care costs. If consumers can get relevant and useful information when they need it most, they are empowered to take control of their health and get the right care they need, at the right place, and at the right time.

Increasingly, health insurance providers are offering tools and incentives to help their members better understand the health care options available to them, and how these options vary when it comes to both cost and quality. By comparing their health care delivery options, consumers can optimize their health care benefits, lower their expected out-of-pocket costs, as well as those paid by their employer and/or health plan.

Health care cost and quality can differ dramatically by location, so here are some solutions that can help people choose high-quality health care at the lowest cost.

  • Utilize provider directory and cost estimation tools provided by your health insurance provider to better understand your options, and the differences in cost (including what portion of overall cost will be the responsibility of the member) and quality to help make conscious and conscientious choices when seeking health care.
  • Find out if financial incentive rewards programs are available that provide an additional incentive to select a preferred location for a medical service.
  • Talk to your doctor to find out if there are alternative referral options that might be more convenient and save you money.
