A new AHIP issue brief provides an overview of surprise medical bills, explaining the circumstances under which such bills are most prevalent and the financial burdens they impose on patients. We also discuss the important role of health care networks in improving quality and affordability.
While highlighting the need for federal legislation, we outline recommendations in five areas: (1) prohibiting surprise medical bills; (2) protecting patients when they need treatment; (3) establishing a fair, market-based reimbursement standard; (4) ensuring that protections cover patients in all commercial health plans; and (5) keeping patients informed.
