Washington, D.C. – July 31, 2023 – New research is finding that Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollees are using supplemental benefits available in those plans. As one example, an overwhelming majority of Elevance Health’s Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollees used at least 1 type of supplemental benefit in 2022 that original Medicare doesn’t cover, and a majority used multiple benefits, according to a new report.

MA enrollees can have access to a wide range of supplemental benefits, such as integrated vision, hearing, and dental benefits; transportation and nutrition support; wellness programs; in-home caregiver support; and innovative telehealth options. To understand how individuals use supplemental benefits, Elevance Health’s Public Policy Institute studied utilization of a variety of supplemental benefits among enrollees in Elevance Health affiliated MA plans across 24 states.

Findings from the report include:

  • MA enrollees who used at least 1 supplemental benefit were more likely to live in areas that had fewer resources, such as food deserts.
  • Dual-eligible MA enrollees used at least 1 supplemental benefit at higher rates than non-duals (83% compared to 75%).
  • 42% of dual-eligible enrollees used at least 3 supplemental benefits.

More than 31 million Americans have chosen MA because it delivers better services, better access to care, and better value. Medicare Advantage has strong bipartisan support because it is a prime example of the government and free market working together to deliver lower costs, more choices, and better outcomes for the American people.
