Statement for Hearing on “Birthing While Black: Examining America’s Black Maternal Health Crisis”

Every American deserves affordable, high-quality care and health coverage regardless of health status, race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or disability. For years, health insurance providers have been committed to improving health equity and addressing the social determinants of health in our communities.

Despite the growing sophistication and quality of care delivered by our health care system, women in the United States still have higher rates of maternal mortality relative to other high-income countries. This problem is particularly acute among people of color, who face an increased risk of poor maternal and infant health outcomes.
