WASHINGTON, D.C. – (November 13, 2023) – AHIP’s Board of Directors has elected Pat Geraghty, President and CEO of GuideWell and Florida Blue, as Board Chair effective January 1, 2024. Geraghty is preceded by David L. Holmberg, President and CEO of Highmark Health, whose term ends in December 2023.

Geraghty was the architect of the strategic restructuring that created GuideWell from the foundation of a nearly 80-year-old health insurance company, transforming it into a health solutions organization at the forefront of reimagining the future of health in America. The GuideWell restructuring is considered a model of strategic reinvention and is featured as a capstone business case in the curriculum of Harvard Business School.

“As health insurance providers, it is our responsibility to ensure that the millions of Americans we serve have access to affordable, equitable, and high-quality coverage and care,” said Geraghty. “Health insurance providers are committed to identifying new and innovative ways to increase coverage, address health disparities, and improve value. As Board Chair, I am honored to further AHIP’s role as a leading voice in how we ensure all Americans get the care and coverage they need to meet their full health potential.”

GuideWell is a $30 billion not-for-profit mutual insurance holding company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida and is the parent to a family of companies. GuideWell comprises Florida Blue, Triple-S Management, GuideWell Health, PopHealthCare, GuideWell Source, and WebTPA. Through a joint venture with Keralty, a multinational health business group with more than 40 years of global experience, GuideWell is expanding care delivery across Florida through more than 40 Sanitas direct care delivery locations. GuideWell serves 38.5 million people across 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including more than 6 million individuals in Florida.

“We thank David for leading AHIP through these last 2 years as our industry has continued to evolve and innovate. David’s wisdom and insight have been invaluable. During his tenure as Board Chair, AHIP advocated to extend the Affordable Care Act’s tax credits, supported efforts to maintain coverage through the Medicaid redetermination process, defended the Medicare Advantage program, and highlighted the importance of employer-based coverage. He has worked tirelessly to promote solutions that increase value, improve equity, and result in better overall health care,” said Julie Simon Miller, AHIP Interim CEO. “We are excited to have Pat lead us as we remain laser focused on making health care better and coverage more affordable for all Americans.”

“I congratulate Pat on being selected as the next Chair of AHIP’s Board of Directors,” said David Holmberg outgoing Board Chair and current President and CEO of Highmark Health. “His vision, leadership, and wealth of experience will have an immediate positive impact on our industry and the people and communities our members serve.”
