Seniors are overwhelmingly satisfied with their Medicare supplemental insurance coverage. According to a new study by Global Strategy Group on behalf of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), nine out of ten of these beneficiaries are satisfied with their additional coverage, and more than half (54 percent) would recommend their plan to a friend or family member.

Supplemental plans offer coverage for out-of-pocket costs that are not covered by traditional Medicare, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. The study gauged beneficiary feedback on the value, benefits, customer service, and overall quality of care received through these plans.

Additional key findings include:

  • Beneficiaries reported being most satisfied with the services and benefits covered by their plans (93 percent satisfied) and the process to enroll and renew their policy (87 percent satisfied).
  • More than 90 percent agree their coverage allows them to see the doctors and specialists they know and trust; protects them against unexpected, unpredictable medical costs; and makes it easier to handle medical bills and paperwork.
  • The vast majority (91 percent) are concerned, and over half (53 percent) are extremely concerned, about losing their financial security if they were unable to receive their supplemental benefits.

More than 12 million seniors rely on Medicare supplemental insurance to offer further protection and consistent, comprehensive coverage. And that number is rising year-over-year, with almost a million more beneficiaries signing up for these plans from 2014 to 2015.

“The response to this survey was clear – Medicare supplemental insurance continues to offer tremendous value to millions of seniors,” said Tom Meyers, AHIP Vice President of Product Policy. “That’s why so many choose these innovative plans to help bolster their coverage, promote overall health and wellness, and provide financial security.”
